My friend, Melissa, over at Never a Dull Moment recently sent me a few questions about Medifast and the program. With BlogHer coming up this week {I’m leaving in 2 days…eeek!}, I thought that this was the perfect time to share my answers to her often asked questions.
First, a little about Medifast.
The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan: Each day, you enjoy five Medifast Meals and one Lean & Green Meal.
Five Medifast Meals
Choose five Medifast Meals from over 70 different choices, including shakes, soups, stew, chili, oatmeal, eggs, fruit drinks, iced teas, hot beverages, crunch bars, pretzel sticks, cheese puffs, puddings, brownies, soft-serve, and pancakes.
One Lean & Green Meal
This includes a generous serving of lean protein along with three servings of non-starchy vegetables. You can choose dinnertime for your Lean & Green Meal, or enjoy it at any time that works with your schedule.
Now on to the questions!
1. How hard is it to stay “on plan”?
There are days that I still struggle to stay “on plan.” It’s hard! There are temptations everywhere! But, by being on the program, I know what my boundaries are. And if I over step those boundaries, I know I am going to pay for it when I step on that scale. I have also learned that when I really go off-plan, I feel horrible. No seriously, I get sick. My tummy gets all kinds of messed up and I just feel “ugh”.
2. How hard do you think it will be to not gain the weight back when you go back to “real food”?
I will always have to eat the way I have been eating the past 7 months. That is 6 small meals a day, low in carb, high in protein and drink lots of water! The one thing that I absolutely love about Medifast is that it has taught me how to eat for my body.
3. Can you still have coffee with creamer (flavored)?
I do still use a little creamer in my coffee but no where near what I used to use. I use sugar-free and I count it as one of my condiments for the day.
4. The TMI part, how long does it take for your body to get used to the medifast products and how bad were the side effects?
The only side effects that I experienced were the first week irritability and headaches {see below}. Yes, your body does need time to adjust eating differently but it doesn’t take long for that adjustment to occur.
5. Did you feel weak queasy at first?
Queasy? No. Raging headache? Yes. Before I started Medifast, Kelly warned me about the headaches. Are they bad? I’m not gonna lie, they suck. But they pass quickly. The reason for the headaches is your body being thrown into Ketosis. Your body is now taking your fat and using it for energy.
6. What is your favorite product?
I actually have a few: Peanut Butter Crunch Bars, Brownie {yes, you read that right, a Brownie} and the White Cheddar Soy Crisps.
7. What is your least favorite product?
Not gonna lie. It’s the eggs. I can’t even smell them without gagging!
8. Why would you recommend Medifast to others?
To me, Medifast is more than diet. It’s a lifestyle change. Once you get that in your mind, you set up for success! By being on the plan, you will learn how to eat, what to eat, and how it affects your body and weight loss. Once you transition off the plan, you will be left with the necessary tools to maintain your weight loss!
