National Geographic Super Readers

Anyone who has kids that are around the age of 4 know that there are two things that hold true for them all. First, they are curious about everything under the sun. Second, they love animals.

Ethan is certainly no different! He asks a thousand questions about everything and rarely are we able to satisfy his curiosity. We came across the National Geographic Kids collection and immediately thought that this would satisfy both of these traits, as well as put him on the track to begin reading comprehension.

We have used these materials as a precursor to going to the zoo and the aquarium. We look at everything ahead of time and try to identify which animals we will see during the day. Ethan loves everything to do with sharks and the aquarium, so he is naturally drawn to those pages. From a very young age, he has always picked out books well above his level, just because he saw a shark on the cover.

I’ve found during the course of reviewing these materials with him that he is beginning to associate letters to animals. He finds himself trying to sound out the first letter of the animal and seeing if it matches the letter in print. He gets very excited when he comes to the correct answer!

Every night before bed, we make sure to open up the “Weird But True” fact book and find something that will surely give him a laugh before bed. He loves to check out the shark page to try and count how many teeth they have. This has led to him going to the shark tank at the aquarium and trying to find how many teeth are laying on the tank bottom.

While this is the first track we have begun Ethan on the track to becoming a young reader, we believe it is the correct one. Because the material is easy to understand and is in his area of interest, it allows him to gravitate towards the subject matter and really take an interest in learning, processing and retaining additional information each time we study it together.

Whether or not your child shows the same interests as Ethan, I would recommend giving the National Geographic Kids series a try. Science is a constant throughout their lives and introducing it at a young age allows us to begin building the foundation for a successful future.
