Blackberry Recipes Bursting with Flavor

From cobblers to jams to pies, these blackberry recipes are bursting with flavor!

Blackberries are often overlooked when it comes to berries. But these dark red and black berries are perfect for desserts, syrups, jams, and even drinks! Blackberries are a “superfood” packed with nutrients. Even though they have short season (mid-summer to early fall), frozen blackberries can be used in a pinch!

Blackberry  Growing and Picking Tips

Growing your own blackberries is super easy. They are far and away the simplest food that we grow in our yard. They require some staking and watering every other day. Otherwise, they really care for themselves.

Local is best and freshest. Grab blackberries at your local farmer’s market.  Or check out Pick Your Own and find a pick-your-own farm where you can take the kids, or make a date with your partner and enjoy the fresh air. When you take the kids, talk about how blackberries form.

What to Look for When Picking Blackberries

Since berries don’t ripen once plucked, choose ripe ones.  Avoid packages with juice showing or with bruised or moldy fruit.

How to Store Blackberries

Refrigerate berries in their containers and use within a few days. Berries are sensitive to moisture so don’t store in plastic bags. Wash just before use.

There is nothing better than washing and popping a fresh blackberry into your mouth or dropping them on top of vanilla ice cream or yogurt. They have such a great taste, sometimes it just needs to be simple. While eating them in their simplest form is great, there are a lot of ways to use blackberries in your cooking and baking.

    1. I don’t use any netting. We get so many that I’m cool with sharing some with the birds. Plus, birds can get stuck in the netting and die. Can’t handle that!! They tend to go after blueberries far more than blackberries too.
