Mason jars: Select mason jars in various sizes and shapes, depending on your preference.

Essential oils: Choose essential oils known for their bug-repelling properties, such as citronella, lemongrass, lavender, or eucalyptus.

Fresh herbs: Opt for herbs like mint, rosemary, or basil, which insects tend to avoid.

Floating candles or tea lights: These will provide the illuminating element for your luminaries.

Decorative elements (optional): Ribbons, twine, or adhesive labels can add a personal touch to your creations.

Strategic placement: Position your Bug Repellent Mason Jar Luminaries in outdoor areas where you typically spend time or where bugs tend to gather, such as patios, decks, or near seating areas.

Lighting the luminaries: As the evening approaches, light the candles in the mason jars using a long match or a candle lighter. The soft glow will create a warm and inviting atmosphere while repelling bugs.

Safety precautions: Always exercise caution when using open flames. Ensure the luminaries are placed on stable surfaces away from flammable objects and never leave them unattended.

Instructions

  • Start by slicing your lemon and limes. You can mix these in your mason jars or keep them separate! I have found that 2-3 slices in each mason jar is enough. I like to place a slice of both lemon and limes in my jars for a fresh citrus scent.
  • Next, place two sprigs of your favorite herb in your mason jar. My favorite summer scent is basil so I tend to use that a lot in my mason jars. Rosemary is my second go-to herb.
  • Fill each jar 3/4 of the way full with water. You have to make sure you leave room for your floating candles!
  • Add the lemongrass essential oil. Try not to add more than about 10-15 drops! Remember when using essential oils, a little bit goes a long way!
  • Swirl to mix into the water.

  • Add more water until the jar is filled. Place an unscented floating candle on top. Or if you don’t have any on hand and you really want to make these NOW, a good ‘ole tea light will work as well!
Bug Repellent Mason Jar Luminaries are a delightful and effective way to keep bugs at bay while adding a touch of charm to your outdoor space. By using natural ingredients and your creativity, you can create a bug-free oasis where you can relax and enjoy summer evenings to the fullest. So, gather your supplies, let your imagination soar, and say goodbye to those bothersome bugs this season!
