A Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Party

My baby is one. Naturally, we had a bash to celebrate this milestone and I didn’t hold back. Originally, I was going for an Under the Sea theme. But then, I started seeing all of the cute Hungry Caterpillar Birthday pins on Pinterest and I quickly changed the theme. And I’m glad I did.

Let’s go over the details, shall we?

A Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Party Details

1. Invitations – My dear friend, Jenni of 9 designs, once again knocked it out of the park with the invites!

2.
Caterpillar Cupcake Cake – Oh yes, I did it. Oh yes, it was amazing. I got so many compliments on this caterpillar cake!  I made a 6 inch round cake for Benny’s smash cake and added chocolate melting wafers for eyes, large confetti sprinkle for the nose, and black pipe cleaners for the antennae and feet. The body is made out of two dozen funfetti cupcakes piped with green icing. I had a hard time finding just the right cake board to put the cupcakes on so I improvised. I used a pizza box covered with coordinating wrapping paper!

3. Decor – The decor was simple: anything red or green, anything primary color polka dots. One of the most talked about decorations was the caterpillar paper lantern. I found the paper lanterns in the dollar section at Michael’s and added two pipe cleaners for the antennae. Just hand with some fishing line, and viola you have a caterpillar!

4. Favors – Favors were so easy for me! I grabbed some bug catchers from the dollar store {and they had then in red and green to boot}. They included a bug net as well. I filled the catchers with some gummy worms and slapped on a thank you label. The kids loved them!

5. Food – We kept the food simple and somewhat along the lines of the story. We had sandwiches, fruit salad, strawberries, a cheese and meat tray, and chicken nuggets for the kids. I made food labels that, of course, showed off the theme of the book.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar theme was a fun first birthday idea! I am currently working on E’s birthday which is ice cream themed and can’t wait to share all the details with you.

  1. Love. Love. Love. This is such a creative and lovely birthday theme. I’m really into themes for my kid’s birthdays. Last year, we had a Nice Monsters Party and the year before it was all about Balls. I’ve tried to ignore the whole princess thing but I bet next year, that theme will rear it’s ugly head! Great job, Steph!

    1. Oh you know the princess theme is coming! But I have seen a lot of princess themes that aren’t too princessy. Does that even make sense?

  2. I have seen a ton of party ideas on Pinterest… but this one is amazing!! I have not yet had a party for my kiddos since joining Pinterest, so I have a bunch of ideas saved there. I think you did a great job! 🙂

  3. Seriously, how freakin’ cute is this? Love all the great ideas!

  4. LOVE IT! Great job! I love the idea and the decor. We are doing a ‘Let’s Make a Splash’ 1st birthday for my daughter this weekend and we are going with crabs with teal and red. I love the simple menu and the bug catchers were perfect!

  7. LOVE!!! What did we do before pinterest??? I did a “one” theme for Michael’s first, Sesame Street for his 2nd, and an ocean theme last year. This year, we are having his party at an arcade / ice cream parlor, so I don’t have to do any decorating or planning – and I’m kind of bummed about it 🙂

    1. IKR! Without Pinterest, this would not have happened. I am in the same boat with E’s party at the ice cream place. They do everything for you. But I am trying to throw in a few things here and there to make it a little more special.

  8. I love it! So super cute. The lantern idea was cute.. Looks like it all went well!

I am currently planning Lennox’s second birthday party. It is going to be Yo Gabba Gabba / Rainbow theme. I hope it turns out as cute as your party!

  9. I LOVE this! I was debating between Dr. Seuss and Hungry Caterpillar for my little dude’s 1st birthday and ended up doing Dr. Seuss but I seriously LOVE how you decorated for the HC theme! Awesome job, Mama!

    1. Oh we will definitely just chill for the 2nd one. And since their birthdays are only 2 weeks apart, there will be joint parties from this point forward!
