We are back in the swing of our school routine. We’ve re-established our routine for the past school year and have tweaked a thing or two. One thing is for sure, I have two hungry, growing boys on my hands.
This year, our school also switched up their schedule. Instead of the traditional lunch then recess schedule, they now have recess then lunch. This means they are eating lunch later than they are used to, and they don’t have a lot of time to eat either! By the time they walk in the front door after school, they are starving and looking for snacks!
It’s so easy for them to just start grabbing everything in their path so I have to make sure I have something set up beforehand. And here is where our after school routine has changed a bit. I have been making sure that there is an after-school snack ready to go for when they walk in the door.
After-School Snack Mix
A snack mix is one of the easiest after-school snacks you can make for the kids. And you can make it with virtually anything you have on hand.
Snack Mix Mix-In Ideas:
- Welch’s Fruit Snacks
- Chocolate Chips
- Nuts
- Coconut Flakes
- Pretzels
- Granola
- Crackers
- Dried Fruit
- Popcorn
- Cereal
- Seeds
- Marshmallows
- Peanut Butter Chips
- Raisins
The list could really go on and on. For my latest snack mix, I mixed together Welch’s Fruit Snacks, chocolate chips, walnuts, pretzels, popcorn, and marshmallows. I literally just went into the pantry, took a look around, and grabbed what we had on hand. It’s fun to come up with different flavor combinations and see what the kids like in their Snack Mix.
There’s no true recipe involved. You can eyeball your ingredients and tailor it to what your kids enjoy. Have a kid that likes chocolate? Throw in another handful of chocolate chips. Have a kid that likes fruit snacks? Add in some more Welch’s Fruit Snacks! If you really want to go low-key, have the ingredients out for the kids and let them mix their own Snack Mix!
Why Welch’s Fruit Snacks? Welch’s Fruit Snacks is one of my snack choices for our back to school routine. Welch’s Fruit Snacks are the perfect, delicious snack, AND, fruit is the first ingredient! Whether I am packing them in their lunchboxes or I toss one in my bag on the way to baseball, everyone can enjoy this delicious snack on the go! And I always have a snack on hand.
Making an after-school snack mix has been a lot of fun for the kids and me. They never know what’s going to be in their snack mix when they come home from school, and I have been having fun coming up with new combinations. It is a total win/win situation. They have a snack waiting for them after school so they can get a jump on homework. I have peace of mind that they have a good snack on the table when they get home.
When it comes to after school snacks, talk to your kids about what they would like to see waiting for them. Other ideas include things that are easy to grab. These come in handy for those on-the-go days.
