Earlier today, the hubster sent me the link to a story about a little boy named, Ryan. Ryan has Down Syndrome and was born with a heart defect. Two weeks, doctors told his parents, Erik and Diane, that nothing more could be done to save their little boy. He’s 21 months old. Erik and Diane had to make one of the hardest decisions that any parent has to make. They decided to sign a DNR {Do Not Resuscitate} for Ryan. When they posted about this decision on their Facebook page, they were asked what could people do, what did they need.
Their request? No gifts. No cards. No toys.
Instead they encouraged parents to “go out and create a memory with their children. Have a banana split for dinner!”
Since then, a friend has created a Facebook page called “Ryan’s Banana Split Party” where anyone can share their party in honor of Ryan.
How could I resist?
The hubster stopped on his way home and picked up the ice cream and toppings. It was the perfect night for it. We had a 100+ degree day and what better way to cool off than ice cream for dinner.
The boys were excited!
After reading Ryan’s story, how can you not throw your own banana split {or ice cream} party in his honor? If you host your own little party with your children, leave a link to your post, picture, Instagram picture, Facebook status, etc. in the link up below! Let’s show the Roberts’ family how much their little boy has touched our community!
The story is so sad, but parents like that are so strong!! I don’t know how they do it. Thanks for sharing. I’m going to do this, possibly tonight since my nephew will be staying over! Love!
I hadn’t heard of Ryan’s story until I read this post and so I followed the link and read it. So sad… it brought tears to my eyes as I read it and thought of my own kids and how I would feel. They’re such a strong family.
I think that this week we will have ice cream for dinner too. Because slowing down and spending some fun family time is something that we all need to do once in a while.
Thanks for sharing Ryan’s story. Heartbreaking! One of the hardest parts of my job when I worked in the acute care setting with peds is when my patient’s passed away. 🙁 Nothing worse to a family. We are going to indeed going to do banana splits this weekend in his honor.
I love it! This would be a fantastic thing to add to our BEST SUMMER EVER! A delicious way to honor a sweet boy and his family.
