Having lived in the northeast United States my entire life, I’ve gotten used to winter weather. I’ve sat outside in January in Buffalo to watch a hockey game with snow falling. I’ve sat outside in April in Philadelphia with a cold rain coming down to watch two middling baseball teams play on opening day.

One thing I never expected to see in this area was a Super Bowl. I’ve always been accustomed to the Super Bowl being played in a warm-weather city or in a city with a dome. When I heard it announced that this year’s game would be played in New York/Jersey, I was thrilled. Football is meant to be played in the elements. Now, it may be 50 degrees and sunny on February 2nd, 20 degrees in blinding snow, or something in between. The interesting aspect is the degree of uncertainty.

Some will argue that the Super Bowl should be in a controlled environment so that the best product is seen by the viewing public. My opinion is that this game is no different than any other game on the schedule. You play the cards that Mother Nature deals you and leave it at that.

Having the Super Bowl in the Northeast is a fantastic opportunity and one I’m looking forward to seeing. Just in the last month, we have seen temperatures reach as high as 70 and as low as 0; we have seen torrential rain and blinding snow.

This variety of weather is what will make me a lifelong Northeast resident and I hope that I will experience many more Super Bowls at some of our other great cities in the region.
