The Day I Became a Mommy

I was going to write about some of the special moms in my life since you get to hear about me every.single.day. However, there’s a lot on my mind surrounding this pregnancy and things that happened when I was pregnant with E. So indulge me for a minute.

***

When I was pregnant with E, everything was pretty standard. That is until my feet started to swell and my blood pressure started to climb. Things got dramatically worse around 34 weeks. My feet weren’t recognizable, I was seeing stars for the majority of the day, and I had a nagging headache that just wouldn’t go away.

I was proactive and demanded to be seen by a doctor after a weekend of debating if something was wrong or not. I knew in my heart this just wasn’t right. I was seen by the doctor on a Tuesday. My blood pressure wasn’t great and after being monitored at the hospital, I was discharged. I had a follow up three days later for a blood pressure check with another doctor. When I showed up for that appointment, the doctor took one look at me and sent me right to the hospital to be monitored again.

We thought for sure that I would be sent home again. But we weren’t. The doctor on call explained that something was going on and I had to be admitted for observation. Ok, no big deal right? Wrong. Within a few hours, I went from being observed to having a baby.

Those hours are really a blur {thanks to Ambien and Magnesium Sulfate}. The end result: an emergency c-section at 35 weeks.

Somehow our little boy required little intervention when it came to breathing {just a few puffs of oxygen} and passed his Apgar with flying colors. He was whisked off to the NICU while I was sent to recovery.

The nightmare didn’t end there. After I was wheeled back down to my room, the hubster delivered the bad news. I couldn’t see my brand new baby! He wasn’t allowed out of the NICU. I wasn’t allowed in. For 24 hours, I laid in a bed not feeling like a mommy. All I wanted was to see my baby boy!

The following day, thanks to the kindness of a sweet nurse, I got that chance. As soon as I saw him and started talking to him, he opened his eyes and stared at me. He knew his mommy was there. And that’s all I needed.

I wish I could go back in time and change the events of that day. But there’s one thing I wouldn’t change: the outcome. Regardless of how it happened, I became a mommy that day. I would never take that back.

Being a week away from being a mommy for the second time, things are looking to be a lot different {God willing}. There should be no drama. No nightmare. It should be a happy day. One that we can enjoy as a family of four.
