Family Fun in Lancaster, PA
Last weekend, my family and I were invited to a blogger’s weekend in Lancaster, PA. Our day was completely planned for us by the lovely ladies at Girls’ Lunch Out. The boys had so much fun. Oh, and so did Mom and Dad! I already shared with you where stayed for the night. The Bird-In-Hand Inn is by far on of the best family-friendly hotels we have ever stayed in and we are looking forward to returning.
So what did we do?
The Amish Village
First up was a visit to The Amish Village. I have to admit, the only thing I really knew about the Amish was that they rode in horse and buggies and didn’t have electricity. But there was so much more to learn!
During the 25 minute guided tour, we heard the story of the Pennsylvania Amish lifestyle. Real Amish work in the Village so we can learn about the Lancaster County Amish community. From religious, cultural, and educational traditions, we were given a first-hand glimpse of what it truly means to live “unplugged.”
After the tour, we explored the rest of The AmishVillage. We walked through the one-room schoolhouse and took a look at the animals in the barn {Ben’s favorite!}.
Strasburg Railroad
All aboard! We have visited the Strasburg Railroad a few times but we left this one a surprise. We knew if we told Ethan we were going, that’s all we would have heard about. And this face? Made it all worth it!
This was Ben’s first train ride {ok, technically his 2nd but he was an infant for his 1st} and he loved looking out the window at the cows in the fields. The 45-minute train ride departs daily from Strasburg station. Passengers can choose to ride Coach, First-Class, Open Air or the Dining Car.
The fun doesn’t end after the train ride. You can ride the miniature Pint-sized Pufferbelly steam train, the authentic Pump Car, or take a behind-the-scenes tour to see steam engines being built, restored and refurbished. Strasburg Rail Road has a number of value passes including the brand new Summer Fun Pass, the Rail Baron Pass and the Day Pass. Ethan loved doing the Cranky Cars!
And, shhh, don’t tell them but we will back next month for Day Out With Thomas!
The Choo Choo Barn
Our last stop was the Choo Choo Barn. The Choo Choo Barn –Traintown, U.S.A.® features more than 150 animations and 22 operating trains, this 1,700 square foot handcrafted, work-of-art is packed with small-scale local landmarks and detailed scenes from Lancaster County. Did you catch that? Hand. Crafted. Amazing!
The boys had a blast running around the displays looking for new things each time. Ethan loved pointing out the little things and Ben loved to look for Thomas. One of our favorite displays was the fire department and the house on fire. The fire truck pulls up to the house, firemen come out, and they put the fire out! No detail was missed!
Another favorite? The baseball field! The players actually run the bases.
We had a great family weekend in Lancaster, PA and will definitely be headed back in the near future!
