Ford Warriors in Pink
Every year, we all go through it. We head off to our annual appointment with the same excitement you would have walking through a tar pit. But we do it.
We don the flimsy paper gown in an office that is easily -5 degrees.
With a knock on the door, your doctor enters. She starts small talk as if you’ll forget what’s going on. As she moves through your breast exam, you hold your breath a little.
If you’re lucky, the chit chat continues along with the rest of your appointment. Its when the chit chat suddenly stops and your doctor feels around a little more that things change.
Every day a women, just like you, goes through that breast exam. Many will leave their appointment with a script for a mammogram and a wave of emotions that I can not even begin to comprehend.
A few years ago, that woman was my mother. She went in for a routine mammogram and got the call that nobody wants to get. They saw something. They referred her to one of the top breast health doctors in the area. She was in good hands. He did a simple biopsy and confirmed that it was benign. But in those few weeks that we awaited the results, a million outcomes raced through my mind. I can’t even imagine what was going through hers.
Through out the whole time, my mom had a positive outlook. That everything was fine and was going to be ok. It’s the same outlook that I read about from other women who go through breast cancer and treatment. Where do they pull this courage from? I would love to think that I could do the same. But I am not so sure. It seems so easy to go to a dark place and have the “Why me?” mentality.
But when your body becomes a battleground, there is little room for self-pity. Rather, these seemingly normal women summon their inner warrior. They gather their tribe and lead the charge to reclaim their body from this voracious disease.
And I really admire that.

It is scary – in 2008 they found a lump in my right breast and I had to go for an ultrasound. It can happen to anyone, at any given time. Mine turned out to be fibrous tissue, but the waiting and not knowing is terrifying. Campaigns like these are so important!
