It’s that time of year that many bloggers dread: tax time. You know you are in full swing when the 1099s start filling your mailbox and every other question in Facebook groups is about taxes. Every year I say I am going to get better at keeping records so I can just hand everything over to my husband. But we all know how that goes.
Truth be told, I have gotten better. But there is room for improvement. So for 2016, I set up a Tax Prep Binder. A place where I can file away all of the important documents and keep track of donations, expenses, and mileage.
How to Create a Tax Prep Binder
To create a Tax Prep binder like mine, you will need the following supplies:
- binder
- 5 binder dividers
- 3 zipper binder pocket
- DYMO LabelWriter® 450 Value Pack: includes a roll of LW Appointment Card Labels, LW Shipping Labels, LW File Folder Labels and LW Multi-Purpose Labels
- Tax Prep Binder printables
Tax Prep Instructions
Start by setting up your DYMO LabelWriter® with the Multi-Purpose Labels. The DYMO LabelWriter® allows you to customize and print address, file folder and barcode labels, plus name badges and more with DYMO Label™ software – all from your PC or Mac®. Make sure you read the directions on how to properly load your labels so you don’t get a jam. Don’t ask how I know this. 😉
Once you have your labels loaded, open up the DYMO software to create your labels. You are going to need four labels this size: one for the side of your binder, and one each for the following: 1099s, Receipts, and Check Stubs. By using the DYMO, you can eliminate the waste and hassle of sheet labels – print precise quantities without difficulty.
If you want to decorate your binder a bit, you can use some fun washi tape down the spine of the binder. Add your Tax Prep 2016 label. This will make it easy to grab and go!
Now you are ready to set up the inside! You will start with your divider. Five dividers are plenty. This will give you a section for Income, Expenses, Donations, Mileage, and Misc.
Using the 2-Up File Folder Labels print out labels for your binder sections. They may be a little big for your divider so cut to fit. By using the DYMO, you can create custom labels from 60+ label styles and layouts and you can switch out labels quickly!
Now you will put the other large labels on your zipper binder pouches. These will hold any 1099s you receive, check stubs from the year, and a receipts for your expenses.
Finally, add in your Tax Prep printables in the appropriate sections with the Tax Prep Checklist in the front!
Now it’s time to get your own set of Tax Prep Printables! Simply click the download button and either print now or save to your computer for later! Printable includes Tax Prep Checklist, Income Tacker, Donation Records, Expense Tracker, and Mileage Tracker!

I like the idea of a 3 ring binder so you can so easily flip through it. Definitely easy to make, and I’m guessing it will be just as easy to keep up with all year long. #client
