What is a pantry recipe?
In short, anything could be seen as a pantry recipe! When I make a pantry recipe, I am looking to use up staples that I have on hand in the house. Whether it comes from the pantry or fridge or freezer, these are recipes that I can cook up easily and not have to run to the grocery store.
What essentials should you have in your pantry?
In The Pantry
Some of these essentials are no-brainers and some may surprise you!
- flour
- sugar
- baking powder and baking soda
- salt
- pepper
- olive oil
- vegetable oil
- chicken stock or broth
- beef stock or broth
- vegetable stock or broth
- canned tomatoes
- tomato sauce
- tomato paste
- canned beans: black, kidney, white
- tuna
- pasta
- rice
- dried bread crumbs
- vinegars: balsamic, cider, white, sherry, and wine vinegars
- soy sauce
- hot sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- dried basil
- bay leaves
- crushed red pepper flakes
- seasoned salt
- chili powder
- cumin
- cinnamon
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- oregano
- paprika
- dried parsley
These should always be in your pantry and ready to go when you need them.
In the Fridge
And, while these aren’t quite things you keep in the pantry, you should have these items in the fridge as well.
- eggs
- milk
- butter and/or margarine
- ketchup
- mayo
- mustard
- parmesan cheese
- your favorite cheeses
In the Freezer
When you are done stocking the fridge, it’s time to stock the freezer.
- frozen corn
- frozen peas
- frozen carrots
- ground beef
- chicken
Other Items to Have on Hand
If you want an even fuller pantry, you can add these bonus items. I always have these on hand.

- maple syrup
- brown sugar
- confectioner’s sugar
- cooking spray
- vanilla extract
- Herbs and spices: allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, coriander, dill, marjoram, dry mustard, Italian seasoning, rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme
