This summer was our first experience with travel baseball. It was a learning curve for everyone. For me, as a mom. For my husband, as a coach. And for my son, as a player. We learned a lot about baseball but we also learned a lot of life lessons.
To say his team struggled is an understatement. Game after a game, they struggled in the outfield and they struggled at the plate. Despite all the hard work my son was putting in at the cages, the bat seemed to rarely leave his shoulder. And he wasn’t the only one.
After a few loses, I knew we needed a new plan. Dad would focus on the outer player, helping him with technique and working with him more. And me? I would work on the inner player. I would build him up. Tell him how much I enjoyed watching him play. Cheer on every baby step he made. Most importantly, my job was to make sure he was still having fun.
After a particularly rough loss, I was nervous to even talk to my son about the game. When I finally did, he shocked me with his attitude towards the game. It was confirmation that my focusing on his inner player was actually helping!
Mom, is it fun to win? Sure. But when you make a mistake, you learn from it. And get better. I’d rather keep getting better as a baseball player, then win all the time. It’s fine.
Did you hear that? All the times he shrugged me off and told me to stop talking about it, he was actually listening! All that lifting up and filling his bucket finally paid off. And so did his (and his team’s) hard work. They ended the season on a high note, winning 3 out of their last 4 games!
And we can’t wait for fall ball to start! It’s moments like that that make this parenting thing all worth it. When you see them growing into strong, well-rounded kids. You know you are doing something right!
