Thumbprints

Thumbprints are one of the most classic Christmas cookies you can bake during the holidays. With a buttery shortbread base and warm jam, they are the hit of the cookie tray!

DAY 11 OF THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS COOKIES: THUMBPRINTS

Thumbprint cookies are a classic Christmas cookie! They’re easy to customize, fun for kids to help make, and can be made ahead of time and frozen.

These thumbprints are really simple to make but look gorgeous on your holiday cookie tray.

Thumbprint cookies are the perfect way to get the kids in the kitchen and teach them how to bake! The recipe is super simple and they will love using their thumbs to make the indents on the cookies.

Just make sure they are doing more baking and less eating! These Thumbprints tend to disappear off the cooling rack.

TO MAKE THESE Thumbprints, you will need:

  • stand mixer
  • baking sheet
  • 3 hard boiled egg yolks
  • 1/2 lb butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cup flour
  • jam or jelly

HOW TO MAKE Thumbprints

Gather all of your ingredients together, making sure your butter is softened. Preheat your oven to 350 F.

In a stand mixer, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla and flour.

Break and mash egg yolks and add to mixture. Beat until creamy. Chill dough in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

Using a small cookie scoop, make dough balls about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and make an indentation with your thumb.

Bake for 12 minutes. Remove your cookies from oven and add your favorite jelly or jam into the indentation.

Bake for 4 more minutes. Let cool completely. It will take a few hours for the jam to set. Store in an air-tight container.

Tips for making Thumbprints

  • You use whatever jam or jelly you like! I like to use raspberry or blackberry but strawberry, apricot blueberry, and orange marmalade all work as well.
  • If the jam is too firm and isn’t easy to drop into the cookies, place it in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for a few seconds.
  • Take your Thumbprints up a notch and drizzle with icing.
