Tips for a Safe Halloween

Trick-or-treating  is a time of fun and excitement for children! But for us parents? It can be a little scary. With so many kids out and so little light, it’s easy for a child to get lost.  By following simple safety tips you can help to make your child’s Halloween both happy and safe!

10 Halloween Safety Tips

1. Warn children not to eat any of their treats before they get home.

2. Examine all edibles carefully and throw away any candy that’s unwrapped or has a torn wrapper.

3. Do not allow children under three to have any novelty items or candies small enough to present a choking hazard.

4. Have children carry flashlights to light up dark areas.

5. Clear steps, lawns, and porches of anything that could trip trick-or-treaters.

6 Make sure that swords, knives, and similar accessories are made of flexible materials.

7. Children should not enter homes or apartment buildings unless an adult is with them. An adult should accompany young children.

8. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure they can see where they are going!

9. Use reflective tape as part of costume decoration. Make or buy costumes light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.

10. Wear properly fitted shoes or boots.

If you want to take Halloween safety another step further, slap an Uh Oh Band on your child!

uhoh bands

Designed by a mom, this allergy-free, 100% silicone safety bracelet features a simple call-to-action message of “Uh Oh, I’m Lost” on the front with a strip on the back to easily write a phone number. The international symbol for first aid adds to the “help” message. Kids just need to learn to point to their band! It’s simple and potentially life-saving. The child’s name is kept off the band so that just in case someone who doesn’t have the greatest of intentions sees your lost child, they won’t be able to use the name as a false sense of familiarity.

These tips along with the Uh Oh Band will help to protect your child from harm during trick-or-treating and other holiday activities. Even though this is a fun holiday, safety comes first!

Disclosure: I was provided UhOh Bands for my review. All opinions are my own.
