Every year, we have a White Elephant Gift exchange at Christmas. And each year, everyone tries to outdo each other and have the most coveted gift of the swap.
When choosing a gift for a White Elephant Exchange, you could go a number of ways: funny, practical, and just plain absurd. Regardless of what you are going for, we have a gift idea for you below!
What is a White Elephant Exchange?
A White Elephant Gift Exchange is a popular Christmas event where people try to walk away with the best present. It also goes by Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa, and a plethora of other names
What are the Rules for White Elephant?
Everyone participating in White Elephant brings an unmarked wrapped gift.
Before you begin, you need to decide who will go first. There are many ways to choose who will begin the White Elephant Exchange:
- youngest to oldest
- oldest to youngest
- pull names out of a hat
- give everyone a number at random
The first person chooses a gift from the pile and unwraps it so everyone can see it. The next person can either choose their own gift from the pile or steal the first persons gift.
If they choose to steal the gift, the first person chooses another gift and wraps it.
The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same – choose a new gift or steal from someone else.
To keep things moving along, there are a couple of limits on gift swapping:
- A present can only be stolen once per turn, which means players who have a gift stolen from them have to wait to get it back.
- After three swaps, the turn automatically comes to an end (otherwise things could drag on for a long time).
After all players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. Anyone whose gift is stolen may steal from someone else (as long as that person hasn’t been stolen from yet). When someone declines to steal a gift, the game comes to an end.
